I am quite happy that there were people that managed to appreciate it, to enjoy such a production, but for me it was a journey where boredom and irritation blended beautifully in some good nights rest.
But I am telling you, as much as I'm used to keep an eye on the indie section/ low budget horrors, The Deeper You Dig was my Achilles' heel, and it got me every single time. Now I know, it does sound extremely bad, not so much for the movie but for me, acting like a really old man, blaming work, stress and so on. This is a beautiful horror, and I'm glad I had the chance to watch it. Plenty of images of violent death in the snowy hunting territory, always artful, but the plain shot of the dead face in the bath tub has the greatest effect. The tarot scenes work just right to reveal character and bring some playfulness to the action, yet also provide a poetic mystery to lift the story out of its brutal details. Put it another way: the story is really about motherly love, and couldn't end in any other way than kindness. The first is covered in an original and satisfying way, but I'm not sure the second was taken to a proper conclusion, given the warning on the release of the seven circles. The shape of the story is an accumulation of guilt for a misdeed, alongside sacrifice in pursuit of justice, which leads to a duel. The sound design too is excellent, helping to part the veil to the other side, and the music always interesting. But we don't linger, as the script and editing keep cutting forward with intelligence. Pure pleasure to be taken through all those serene angles and lively frames, and especially when they address the faces, allowing the actors gorgeous expression in their performances. These film-makers love their camera, and the camera loves them back. After the disappearance of her teen daughter, a woman digs down into her old clairvoyance to see what really happened.
